Join us for the Bubble Car Train Event Days at Bodmin Railway, where you can experience the charm of vintage rail travel through the picturesque Cornish countryside. Our Class 121 'Bubble' car, built in 1960 at the Pressed Steel Works, offers an authentic journey down both of our branch lines, providing breathtaking views and a nostalgic ride that history enthusiasts and families alike will cherish.

Train Description:

  • Built: 1960, Pressed Steel Works
  • Livery: Chiltern Railways Blue
  • Condition: In Service

The Class 121 'Bubble' cars were originally designed for branch line work in the Western Region of British Railways, and our 121020 fits the Bodmin Railway line perfectly. In the brief period between the end of steam in Cornwall and the closure of the line, services between Bodmin Road and Wadebridge were operated by the Class 121. It is believed, though not confirmed, that 121020 may have run over this line during the 1960s.

Remarkably, 121020 remained in mainline passenger service until 2017! It spent its final days on the mainline with Chiltern Railways, serving the Princess Risborough to Aylesbury branch. After being withdrawn from service in 2018, 121020 was acquired by the Bodmin Railway Trust. Thanks to the diligent care by Chiltern Railways, it arrived in excellent condition. In September 2023, 121020 returned to service, ready for our Diesel Gala, and we look forward to its continued appearances throughout the year.

We hope you enjoy this journey through time and the stunning landscapes of Cornwall. Whether you're a railway enthusiast or simply seeking a unique day out, the Bubble Car Train promises a delightful adventure for all ages.

Please note our tickets sales cut-off 12hrs before day of travel. If you wish to travel on the day, we take walk-ins on a first come first serve basis.
